Malawian police have arrested a man for putting up gay rights posters in the street. Peter Sawali was detained after putting up posters saying: “Gay rights are human rights”. He was charged with conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and faces a fine of up to 5,000 kwacha (about 35 US dollars) or up to three months in jail. Police said they suspect the activist was sponsored by international organisations and are searching for other Malawians believed to be involved in the campaign. Two Ugandan journalists were arrested yesterday and charged with libelling President Yoweri Museveni. Senior reporter Angelo Izama and editor Henry Ochieng, both from the Sunday Monitor news magazine, have been released on bail of around 50 US dollars pending trial on 25 February, according to the international press freedom group Committee to Protect Journalists. Both journalists have been summoned for interrogations by the police several times in the past three weeks. The charges relate to an opinion column by Izama published on 20 December that compared the Ugandan government to that of the Philippines under former leader Ferdinand Marcos. The Brazilian government yesterday granted an environmental license for the construction of a controversial hydroelectric dam in the Amazon rainforest. Environmental activists have criticised the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu river, in the northern state of Para. They claim it will devastate a large area of rainforest, damage fish stocks and threaten indigenous groups. Brazil’s environment minister Carlos Minc said whoever wins the 17 billion US dollar contract would have to spend 800 million US dollars fulfilling a series of demands to protect the environment. This includes the relocation of an estimated 12,000 people. Belo Monte will be the world’s third largest hydroelectric dam with an expected capacity of 11,000 megawatts.

“For a long time Russia has been absent in Latin America and countries of the Caribbean. Now a strategic decision has been made – we will actively develop cooperation,” the Russian leader said at talks with President of Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo.

According to Medvedev, such cooperation “is very important for the balance of forces in the world”. Besides, the Russian leader believes “this will help in the solution of global problems, including climate problems”

He said last year he visited four Latin American states, and many delegations from that region visited Russia. This pace will continue this year, Medvedev said, noting that several events are scheduled for 2010.

Stabroek News: Thousands of Region Seven residents rallied in Bartica yesterday to protest government proposals they say will destroy the gold mining industry and with it their livelihoods.

In passionate tones, a sea of yellow-clad residents swept through the mining community, defending their right to mine. Significantly, leaders and villagers of several of the region’s Amerindian communities allied with miners; they participated in the protest march and conveyed messages of support. Local businesses organisations as well as other mining communities showed their support and the majority of businesses in the town were shuttered. The passenger boat service between Parika and Bartica was halted and though schools were open, only a few students turned up.

Reports are that the child, Charran “Sanjay” Sahadeo lived at “Kayman Sankar Backdam” at Blairmont with his mother and stepfather who have since fled the area and are wanted by the police.

Gold & diamonds miners protest Guyana govt attempt to shut down industry

AP: More than 1,000 miners who extract gold and diamonds from pits in southwest Guyana are rallying to protest government plans that would force them to wait six months for new mining permits.

The miners marching Monday through the remote town of Bartica are demanding that President Bharrat Jagdeo’s administration drop the proposal to delay new mining operations to allow for environmental impact studies.
