Andrew Mwenda arrested & The Independent Uganda govt ’security’ thugs

afrol News, 30 April – Uganda’s military intelligence personnel raided the headquarters of the privately-owned fortnightly and the home of its publisher in the capital Kampala, accusing the paper and its staff of possessing “seditious material.”
Andrew Mwenda, a popular journalist who had been a victim of arrests and persecutions in the past, launched ‘The Independent’ few months ago. The publisher and two other journalists were arrested after the raid.

Morgan Tsvangirai & Arthur Mutambara back together again

Opposition leaders Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara, leaders of the two MDC formations, held a press conference in South Africa on Monday where they announced that they would be joining forces to ensure the MDC holds the majority in parliament. This would effectively make ZANU-PF the opposition in parliament for the first time in their history.

Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello says she is not a criminal via letter

Obasanjo-Bello, who is the 12th accused person, is charged with count 55 and 56, which reads conspiracy for retention of proceeds of criminal stolen property: “That you Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, now at large, some time between December 2007 and March 2008 at Abuja, within the judicial division of the high court of the Federal Capital Territory, while serving as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health dishonestly received the sum of N10 million belonging to the Federal Government, having reason to believe such/same to be stolen by you, thereby committed an offence punishable under section 317 of the penal code Act Cap 352 law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Abuja, 1990.”

Fouad Al-Farhan freed by Saudi criminal dictatorship

And Saudi Arabia’s most popular blogger has been freed after serving four months in prison without charge. Fouad Al-Farhan was detained in December after posting critical comments about Saudi government policies. Farhan is known as the “godfather” of blogging in Saudi Arabia. He defines his online mission as the “search for freedom, dignity, justice, equality, public participation and other lost Islamic values”.

Tamil Tigers launch air attack in Ma’nalaa’ru (Weli Oya)

Sri Lankan military officials in Colombo said Sunday that Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) had launched air attack on Sri Lanka Army (SLA) positions in Ma’nalaa’ru (Weli Oya) in the early hours of Sunday around 1:45. This is the second time, after the Black Tiger raid on Anuradhapura airbase in October 2007, the Tigers have deployed their air wing combined with the their ground forces.

The LTTE is yet to release details of its aerial attack in the fighting in Ma’nalaa’ru.
