Bogotá – Colombian police have arrested President Alvaro Uribe’s cousin on suspicion of ties to the country’s right-wing paramilitary death squads. Mario Uribe Escobar was arrested at the Costa Rican embassy in Bogotá. He fled to the Costa Rican embassy and requested asylum after the Colombian authorities issued a warrant for his arrest.
Costa Rica has refused Mario Uribe’s request on the grounds that it would be “inappropriate” to grant asylum to someone suspected of links with death squads. The situation is extremely embarrassing for President Uribe. His government negotiated a peace deal in 2003; dozens of paramilitary leaders surrendered and some 31,000 fighters were demobilised in exchange for reduced prison sentences. (Radio Netherlands)
