Mali: hundreds flee conflict between Army and Touareg

Hundreds of Malians have crossed into neighbouring Burkina Faso to escape fighting between the army and Touareg rebels. Around 300 refugees have been registered in the capital Ouagadougou since April, where they are sheltering in a football stadium. Over 600 others are living in makeshift shelters in Djibo. Violence between Malian soldiers and separatist Touareg rebels has escalated in recent months.

African youths rounded up by Guyana Police

Police yesterday morning rounded up close to a dozen men in the East Bank Demerara community of Agricola during a raid which the lawmen said was a routine exercise.

Patacake charged with Mangoman murder

Kaieteur News: Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday remanded a man to prison for the murder of an East Coast Demerara mango trader.
The accused, 22-year-old Sherwin Nero, also called Sherwin Moses and ‘Patacake’, was read the indictable charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on August 30, last year, at Cove and John, Nero murdered Kumar Singh called ‘Mango Man’. Read more…

Nigerian govt seeking compensation for losses incurred by Nigerians in South Africa

The Nigerian government is seeking compensation for losses incurred by Nigerians in South Africa during the recent xenophobic attacks on foreigners. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe said a list of Nigerians who lost their properties is being compiled. Meanwhile, the South African government has announced plans to set up seven camps around the country for homeless migrants. Many people have been staying in increasingly unsanitary conditions at temporary shelters.

Rwanda singer Simon Bikindi genocide trial

Prosecutors at the genocide trial of Rwandan musician, Simon Bikindi, say he should receive a life sentence if convicted. Bikindi is accused of using his widespread influence and connections to the government of President Juvenal Habyarimana to spread propaganda inciting ethnic Hutus to kill Tutsis. He denies six counts of genocide and related charges. Almost a million people were killed in a space of a month during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

On Friday morning, the State of Israel refused to allow Prof. Norman Finkelstein, an American Jewish political scientist, to enter the country. Finkelstein was arrested at the airport and questioned by the Shin Bet security service for several hours. A day later, it became known that he had been banned from entering Israel for 10 years, for security reasons. Finkelstein managed to meet with a lawyer, who told him his chances of changing the decision were slim. When the Shin Bet decides that someone constitutes a security risk, the courts do not intervene.
