Officer Troy Meade with first-degree manslaughter in Snohomish County of Niles L. Meservey

In an unprecedented act, last Monday (October 26) Snohomish County prosecutors charged Everett Police Officer Troy Meade with first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of 51-year-old Niles L. Meservey of Stanwood, WA. This is reportedly the first officer in Shohomish County to be criminally charged for killing someone while “on duty”. Meservey was killed around 11:30pm on June 10 near Patty’s Eggnest-Chuckwagon Inn in the 6700 block of Evergreen Way in Everett; many witnesses, including another officer on the scene, have stated that neither Meade nor other bystanders were in any immediate danger at the time Meade shot Meservey.

Meade is scheduled to be arraigned (hear the charges to which he will plead guilty/not guilty) this Thursday (November 5) in Snohomish County Superior Court, 3000 Rockefeller Ave, Everett; we think the case number is 09-1-01971-6. In addition, Meservey’s family has filed a $15 million
wrongful death lawsuit against the City of Everett. But as noted in the first article below by Meservey’s daughter, nothing will bring back this Stolen Life. Nor should anyone put much faith in the “justice” system to aggressively prosecute a killer cop; we should expect to see attempts
to have Meade plead guilty to an even lower charge, rather than have the charge raised to something more appropriate to the crime. As always, public scrutiny of cases like this is absolutely necessary for even the minimum amount of justice to be served. We encourage anyone who is able to attend court dates in Snohomish County to do so, to put prosecutors on notice that their actions are being monitored by the public. And as noted in the third article below, there have been at least five killings (that we know of) by police in Snohomish County since November 2008, yet
no other officer has been charged. We will post updates on Meade’s case as we learn of them.
