A detained opposition journalist has been tortured while in the custody of Sudanese authorities, according to his lawyer. A lawyer for the opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP), Mohamed al-Alim, said on Tuesday that Abu Zur al-Amin has been charged with terrorism, espionage and destabilising the constitutional system after allegedly being beaten up by police in jail. Al-Amin is the deputy editor in chief of the PCP’s newspaper Rai al-Shaab. He was arrested earlier this month together with three other newspaper staff and opposition Islamist Hassan al-Turabi. Rai al-Shaab’s editor-in-chief, Yassin Omar al-Imam, said the paper was shut after publishing a report suggesting that Iran built a weapons factory in Sudan to supply insurgents in Africa and the Middle East.
