Guyana Times: Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud has threatened to take legal action against several online news sites in the United States for publishing photographs of him and his two American- born children.
A source close to Persaud said the legal action will be against blog sites as well as hosts which have been featuring the photographs. Among the sites are: Observernews.org and Propagandapress.com. Persaud, the source said, feels the release of the children’s photographs on the websites could put them at risk for harm. Guyana does not have cyber laws in place, and since the children are United States citizens, a case could stand up in American courts.
Earlier in the week, the minister filed a police com plaint alleging he received threats his two children would be kidnapped. Persaud has already contacted the United States embassy here in Guyana and related the kidnapping threats. He told Guyana Times he has been receiving ‘ hate’ mails at his home and his Agriculture Ministry’s office on Regent Road. The mails also contained photographs of his five- year- old daughter and three- year- old son. Persaud has not requested protection from the police for himself and family.
Persaud said he was waiting on the outcome of police investigations and he was not taking the threats lightly. The threats, he said, bring back the mem ory of the horrific death of Satyadeo Sawh and two of his siblings in 2006. They were gunned down by heavily armed men.
At least two online news sites posted different sets of photographs of Persaud and his two children. Articles were captioned “ Robert and his two anchor babies” and “ the American babies”.
