A senior Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) official has issued a call for the Guyana Police Force to do much more to apprehend a group of individuals who publicly assaulted him at a pre-Mash party staged at the Tower Hotel.
The man, who is the head of the Law Enforcement Department, believes that he was attacked after he carried out his duties and ordered his staff to conduct several raids at various night clubs across the country.
Speaking during an interview with Guyana Times, Troy Vanootoon Vannooten said that he and some friends had gone to the “Jones and Wuk Up” pre-Mash party which was staged on Wednesday last. “Around 03:00h in the morning, we decided that we were going to the Edge…we went into the club and my two friends had left my company to meet with some of their friends… I was standing alone when a man walked up to me,” he explained.
The man told a surprised Vanootoon to stop looking at his girlfriend; Vanootoon responded that he did not know what the man was talking about. “He started cuffing me in my head and close to my abdomen. A group of men then surrounded me and they started to beat me up in the club. One of them took a bottle and lashed me in my head, while several of the men cuffed me about my body,” the GRA officer recounted.
He explained that he was then dragged into the washroom where he was given a sound thrashing by the group of men before one of the staff came to his rescue, led him to his vehicle and told him to drive off.
“I went straight to the police station bleeding and made a report at Alberttown [Police Station],” Vanootoon said. He added that he also visited the Georgetown Hospital to seek medical attention for the wounds he sustained after which several medical examinations were undertaken.
The matter was again reported to the Brickdam Police Station on Mash Day after which, Vanootoon explained, the police began their search for the perpetrators but came up empty-handed. Asked whether he knew his attackers, Vanootoon said: “I never spoke with the man [the instigator], but I have seen him around places.”
He told Guyana Times that he strongly believes that the man acted thus because he was upset over the raids which were conducted at several night clubs earlier in the day. Vanootoon could not establish whether there were any link between the owners of the night club and the man who first accosted him.
“I want the police to act more speedily to deal with this issue, because my life is at risk,” he explained stating that the lawmen seemed to be dragging their feet as far as carrying out investigations were concerned.
He has not reported to work for several days because of his condition, but said he will be discussing the matter with his employers to see what assistance can be rendered or what action can be taken.
Asked where were his friends throughout the entire ordeal, the man explained that one was outside and the other one who was still within the club suffered a similar fate when he intervened in the matter.
Calls to the office of Crime Chief Seelall Persaud went unanswered on Tuesday afternoon, but a source at the Criminal Investigation Department said that investigations were continuing into the matter after statements were taken by the police. Images of a badly beaten Vanootoon were seen by Guyana Times.
