COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – A protest by African nations accusing rich countries of doing too little to cut greenhouse gas emissions slowed U.N. climate talks on Monday just four days before world leaders are due to forge a deal in Copenhagen.

After a five-hour standoff, the African nations let talks restart after assurances their objections would be heard. They accused the rich of trying to kill off the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges many industrialized nations to cut emissions until 2012. Read more…

Je peux confirmer que Moussa Dadis Camara est mort

the official word is that Moussa Dadis Camara is recovering well from minor injuries. bullshit! says our source. she’s been in touch with alexandre cece loua [Ministre des Affaires étrangères et des Guinéens de l’Etranger] who was in morocco with dadis camara and probably still is and he’s saying moussa dadis camara is dead. he may have his own agenda but only time will tell. general sekouba konate [Ministre à la Présidence de la République chargé de la Défense nationale] has also confirmed for our source that he heard moussa is dead. he as well may also have his own agenda but we’re on top of it as the hunt for Lieutenant Aboubacar Sidiki Diakite aka Toumba continues.

maybe Kabiné komara is next in line but probably not if the boys with the guns have anything to say about it.

Niger Delta farmers sue Royal Dutch Shell

A group of Nigerian farmers are suing Royal Dutch Shell over an alleged oil spill in the Niger Delta region that they say ruined the livelihood of local villagers. The farmers claim that badly maintained pipelines of a subsidiary of Shell spilt oil that contaminated fish ponds and farms in Bayelsa State in 2005. Backed by environmental group Friends of the Earth Netherlands, the farmers took the case to a Dutch civil court yesterday. They are demanding compensation and hope the court will force Shell to clean up the area affected. The company has denied any responsibility for the incident, arguing the leak was caused by sabotage. The court is expected to announce on 30 December whether it will proceed with the case.

Nigeria free of guinea worm according to Dr. Donald Hopkins

After a 20-year battle against a parasitic worm that causes cripplingly painful infections, Nigeria is believed to be free of the guinea worm. In 1989, when the US-based Carter Center began its eradication programme, there were an estimated 653,000 cases in Nigeria. In the last 12 months not a single worm has been found in the country, according to Dr. Donald Hopkins, chairman of the Carter Center’s International Task Force for Disease Eradication. However, it will take two years for the World Health Organization to make it official. People are stricken when they drink stagnant water containing the worm larvae. The thin, translucent worms can grow as long as 3ft and finally emerge by exuding acid that bursts the skin, causing crippling pain for months. The worms are still found in Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali and Sudan.

Moussa Dadis Camara shot, fellow thug Aboubacar “Toumba” Diakité on the run in Guinea

Guinea’s new dictator  Captain Moussa Dadis Camara survived an assassination attempt by one of his fellow thugs yesterday. Guinea’s communications minister said that the head of the presidential guard, Aboubacar “Toumba” Diakité, shot and wounded Camara in a military camp in the capital Conakry. He said Camara had been flown to Morocco for medical care but was in “good health”. Security has reportedly been tightened in Conakry as local authorities are apparently still searching for Diakité. Analysts say the assassination attempt reflects rumoured divisions within the country’s military forces following the massacre of opposition supporters in September. Human rights groups claim the army opened fire on protesters, killing 157 people. A team of UN investigators has been in Conakry this week to investigate the killings.

A human rights official has been arrested by the Guinean government for criticising the military junta in an interview. Djenabou Diallo, the wife of Mouctar Diallo, claims her husband was arrested last Thursday and taken to the military’s main barracks in Conakry. She says she has been denied permission to see him. Diallo is currently the director of Guinea’s national monitoring group for human rights. The President of Guinea’s Organization for the Defence of Human Rights, Tierno Sow, said Diallo was arrested because of an interview he gave on September 28, the day Guinean soldiers opened fire on protesters at an opposition rally. Human rights groups say at least 157 people died and a United Nations commission is now in Guinea investigating the case.

World Food Programme to close 12 food centres in Somalia

September 15, 2009 propaganda press Leave a comment

The World Food Programme (WFP) will close 12 food centres for mothers and children in Somalia because it has run out of money. The organisation has only received 40 per cent of its budget for 2009. WFP spokesman Peter Smerdon said the group had no other option but to cut aid. The country is struggling with a violent armed conflict, which has driven tens of thousands of people from their homes. A severe drought also threatens food security. Last week the group appealed for 217,000 metric tons of food, worth over 200 million US dollars, to feed 3.5 million people by the end of October when stocks will run-out. The WFP has also said it will have to restrict aid services to Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya.

Gabon opposition calls three-day strike

September 14, 2009 propaganda press Leave a comment

Opposition parties have called for a three-day strike in Gabon this week in objection to the presidential elections of 30 August, which they claim were fixed. The interim president, Rose Rogombe, asked yesterday for the population to ignore the call and the capital Libreville appears to be working as usual, according to today’s reports. Violent riots broke out in the country after the announcement of Ali Ben Bongo’s victory in early September. At least three people died in the city of Port-Gentil and witness accounts of civilian abuses from security forces continue to come out. Bongo is the son of late President of Gabon, Omar Bongo, who ruled the country for 41 years until his death in June.

Mohamed Hussein Ali removed as Kenyan Police Chief sent to Post Office

September 12, 2009 propaganda press Leave a comment

The police chief in Kenya, Mohamed Hussein Ali, has been removed from his position and is now the head of the national post office, according to an announcement made yesterday by President Mwai Kibaki. The official statement said this was a potential first step in a larger reform plan for the security forces in Kenya. International human rights organisations have pointed the police as responsible for most of the 1,500 deaths that happened in a surge of violence after the 2007 Kenyan elections. Calls for a deep reform of the local security forces had accompanied a United Nations report released in January 2009, which described systematic killings committed by the police with total impunity.
