I was in Olympia, Washington driving towards Evergreen State College when I got a phone call from someone in the occupied West Bank of Palestine. An Evergreen graduate named Rachel Corrie had been killed a few days before by an Israeli soldier in an armored bulldozer, and someone with an Australian accent on my cell phone named Tom was wondering whether it was OK for the International Solidarity Movement to use the lyrics to a song I had just written about the incident on their website. Rachel’s murder was followed quickly by the murder of a British ISM activist named Tom Hurndall.

Palestinians Knock Down Part of West Bank Separation Wall Again

In the West Bank, Palestinian activists marked the Berlin Wall anniversary by knocking down part of the Israeli separation wall for the second time in a week.

Abdullah Abu Rahma, coordinator of the Popular Committee Against the Wall: “Today is the twentieth anniversary of the destruction of the Berlin Wall. That’s why we in the Popular Committees campaigned all around Palestine for the destruction of this [West Bank] wall. The campaign is called ‘We Are Going to Jerusalem,’ to arrive at Jerusalem, the holy city, which is important to the Palestinian people, who are prevented from entering it. This is the beginning of our activities, which we are doing to express our hold on our land and our refusal of this wall of torture and humiliation.”

In Israel and the Occupied Territories, a ten-year-old Palestinian girl has been killed in an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip. The girl, Hadel Alfnere, died when an Israeli tank round hit her home in Khan Younis. Two members of her family were wounded. Israel says it was attacking Palestinian militants who were firing rockets into Israel.

On Friday morning, the State of Israel refused to allow Prof. Norman Finkelstein, an American Jewish political scientist, to enter the country. Finkelstein was arrested at the airport and questioned by the Shin Bet security service for several hours. A day later, it became known that he had been banned from entering Israel for 10 years, for security reasons. Finkelstein managed to meet with a lawyer, who told him his chances of changing the decision were slim. When the Shin Bet decides that someone constitutes a security risk, the courts do not intervene.

According to doctors who examined the body of the 23 -year-old Palestinian Reuters cameraman at Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital, it was controversial darts like those, flechettes, fired from an Israeli tank shell that explodes in the air, that caused his death.
