Umida Akhmedova & “The Burden of Virginity” convicted in Uzbekistan

February 13, 2010 propaganda press Leave a comment

A district court in Uzbekistan’s capital Tashkent yesterday found a prominent photographer and film maker guilty of slandering and insulting the Uzbek people. However, the judge decided to grant Umida Akhmedova amnesty in honour of the 18th anniversary of Uzbek independence, her lawyer said. Akhmedova could have faced up to three years in prison. She was charged for making the documentary “The Burden of Virginity” and publishing a book of photographs – “Woman and Man: From Dawn till Night” – which portrayed daily life in Uzbekistan. Her trial had been criticised by several international rights groups. Amnesty International condemned her conviction “simply for exercising her right to freedom of expression” and called for it to be invalidated.

Belo Monte dam in Amazon approved by Brazilian govt

The Brazilian government yesterday granted an environmental license for the construction of a controversial hydroelectric dam in the Amazon rainforest. Environmental activists have criticised the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu river, in the northern state of Para. They claim it will devastate a large area of rainforest, damage fish stocks and threaten indigenous groups. Brazil’s environment minister Carlos Minc said whoever wins the 17 billion US dollar contract would have to spend 800 million US dollars fulfilling a series of demands to protect the environment. This includes the relocation of an estimated 12,000 people. Belo Monte will be the world’s third largest hydroelectric dam with an expected capacity of 11,000 megawatts.

Sarath Fonseka may face trial in Sri Lanka – Gotabaya Rajapaksa

The Sri Lankan government is reportedly considering taking action against defeated presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka. Defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa – the thuggish brother of re-elected fraudster President Mahinda Rajapaksa – claimed Fonseka had divulged sensitive information to the public in the run-up to the elections. Meanwhile, Fonseka has rejected the result and told the BBC that he wants to leave the country because of death threats. He said yesterday he had lodged a protest with the independent elections commission and would also petition the Supreme Court for an annulment of the result. Several poll monitors and human rights groups also criticised the elections today, highlighting counting irregularities and the president’s misuse of state resources.

Democracy Now! We pay tribute to the late historian, writer and activist Howard Zinn, who died suddenly on Wednesday of a heart attack at the age of eighty-seven. Howard Zinn’s classic work A People’s History of the United States changed the way we look at history in America. It has sold over a million copies and was recently made into a television special called The People Speak. We remember Howard Zinn in his own words, and we speak with those who knew him best: Noam Chomsky, Alice Walker, Naomi Klein and Anthony Arnove. [includes rush transcript]

Alistair Hulett, Through The Smoke Of Innocence

alistair hulettAlistair Hulett has has died
Icon of Scottish folk music, international socialism, and Australian punk rock dead at 57

Today is my daughter Leila’s fourth birthday, and while this occasion brings my thoughts back to the day she was born, the past 24 hours have otherwise been full of fairly devastating news.

If the left can admit to having icons, then two of them have just died. Yesterday it was the great historian and activist Howard Zinn, with whom I had the pleasure of sharing many stages around the US over many years. Much has been written about Zinn’s death at the age of 87, and I think many more people will be discovering his groundbreaking work who may not have heard of him til now. Read more…
