Although details of the meetings remained sketchy, a source familiar with the ongoing power tussle in Aso Rock Presidential Villa told Vanguard that “such a meeting couldn’t have dwelt more on any other thing than to cripple the influence of the Acting President.”

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan the new president of Nigeria

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Ph.D

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Ph.D

A Nigerian court cleared the way on Wednesday for Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan to perform all presidential duties while the country’s ailing leader is away. The ruling follows Tuesday’s demonstrations in Abuja by hundreds of Nigerians protesting against the absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua, who has been in Saudi Arabia receiving medical treatment for a heart condition since November. However, the court’s decision does not make Jonathan the official head of state, as this requires a formal transfer of power. The power vacuum in Nigeria had prompted calls for Jonathan to take over as acting president. However, the issue is sensitive as ruling party leaders are alternately picked from the north and south of the country. Yar’Adua is from the north and Jonathan is from the south but the next southern leader is not due to take office until elections in 2011. [so fucking what?!]

umaru yar'adua photo from saudi arabia?

they say you must not speak ill of the dead. so they say

Kaduna —President Umaru Yar’Adua yesterday broke his silence, 50 days after he left Nigeria to Saudi Arabia … saying he was alive, but does not know when he will return.

In an interview with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on Monday, Yar’Adua said his condition was improving, but that his coming home will depend on his doctors.
However, Prof. Wole Soyinka, leading other human rights activists and civil society groups in a protest march to the National Assembly yesterday, said the voice in the BBC interview was not Yar’Adua’s voice, but a computerized voice.
In the phone interview with BBC, Yar’Adua said: “My brothers in Nigeria, I want to inform you that I am getting better insha-Allahu. By the grace of God, any time my doctors discharge me, I will come back home to Nigeria to continue my work. I want to also thank all Nigerians for their prayers for me and for the nation

Niger Delta farmers sue Royal Dutch Shell

A group of Nigerian farmers are suing Royal Dutch Shell over an alleged oil spill in the Niger Delta region that they say ruined the livelihood of local villagers. The farmers claim that badly maintained pipelines of a subsidiary of Shell spilt oil that contaminated fish ponds and farms in Bayelsa State in 2005. Backed by environmental group Friends of the Earth Netherlands, the farmers took the case to a Dutch civil court yesterday. They are demanding compensation and hope the court will force Shell to clean up the area affected. The company has denied any responsibility for the incident, arguing the leak was caused by sabotage. The court is expected to announce on 30 December whether it will proceed with the case.

World Food Programme to close 12 food centres in Somalia

September 15, 2009 propaganda press Leave a comment

The World Food Programme (WFP) will close 12 food centres for mothers and children in Somalia because it has run out of money. The organisation has only received 40 per cent of its budget for 2009. WFP spokesman Peter Smerdon said the group had no other option but to cut aid. The country is struggling with a violent armed conflict, which has driven tens of thousands of people from their homes. A severe drought also threatens food security. Last week the group appealed for 217,000 metric tons of food, worth over 200 million US dollars, to feed 3.5 million people by the end of October when stocks will run-out. The WFP has also said it will have to restrict aid services to Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya.
