Haiti destroyed by earthquake

Telegraph: The tremor sparked widespread panic as it brought down buildings including the presidential palace, hotels, a hospital and the UN headquarters in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince (affected landmarks on Google maps). Large numbers of UN staff were reported to be missing, as well as two American and two Australian citizens.

The quake was the strongest to hit the country in 200 years and was felt as far away as Cuba.

Thousands feared dead in Haiti quake
Thousands of people are feared dead after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Caribbean nation of Haiti on Tuesday. The extent of the damage is still unclear as communication and energy systems are down and rescue teams work through the rubble. The presidential palace, the United Nations headquarters, a hospital and countless shantytown dwellings are among the buildings that collapsed. The Red Cross estimates that up to three million people have been affected by the earthquake, the worst to hit the region in over 200 years. Haiti’s envoy to the United States said the cost of the damage could reach billions of US dollars. International organisations are planning a major disaster relief effort, while several nations are preparing to send aid.
