Plans of creating a new state within India’s southern Andhra Pradesh state are fuelling similar demands from minority groups across the country. The government’s decision on Wednesday to initiate the process of forming the new Telangana state – which would spread over 10 northern districts of Andhra Pradesh – has driven the region into a political crisis this week. The agitation has sparked fresh demands from parties in other regions that are campaigning for the creation of new states. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha is set to start a four day strike in Darjeeling on Monday. The Bodo tribe in the north-eastern state of Assam has also spoken up for a separate state.
