Liberia ordered to pay 1978 debt to vultures Hamsah Investments and Wall Capital

A British court ruled yesterday that Liberia has to pay over 20 million US dollars to two Caribbean-registered investment funds for debts that are more than 30 years old. The figure corresponds to around five per cent of Liberia’s total budget for 2009, according to the BBC. Details of the case have not been released, but according to the BBC the sum refers to a 6.5 million US dollar loan that Liberia took from the US-based Chemical Bank in 1978. Critics have described the two investment funds, Hamsah Investments and Wall Capital, as “vultures” for buying up government debts and pursuing them through international courts. Liberia has said it cannot afford to pay the money and accused the funds of profiting from poverty.

Firestone Rubber Plantation Company polluting Liberian creeks with orthophosphate

A three-month investigation by the Liberian government has found an American rubber company guilty of polluting local water sources. The Firestone Rubber Plantation Company is located 48km south-east of the capital Monrovia and has been found to be contaminating creeks in the region with high levels of orthophosphate, according to the investigation’s final report. Senator Roland Kahn and Charles Bennie land dispute in Liberia

At least 13 farm workers are dead after a violent clash over a plot of farmland 55 kilometers south-east of the capital, Monrovia.

The land, at the border of Margibi and Grand Bassa counties, has been claimed by both Senator Roland Kahn and Charles Bennie, a former official of a defunct rebel group.

Isaac Saye Mussah aka Gen. Dead Body Killer’ gave up the ghost in Monrovia

The NEWS has learnt that defunct National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) feared battlefront commander Isaac Saye Mussah has died.
Mr. Mussah who was known for shooting dead bodies for which he acquired the nickname ‘Gen. Dead Body Killer’ gave up the ghost last Saturday afternoon at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Sinkor, Monrovia.
