Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce wants decriminalisation of prostitution for South Africa World Cup

South African NGO calls for decriminalisation of prostitution
Sex workers’ advocates have called for the decriminalisation of prostitution in South Africa as a preventive measure to contain the spread of HIV during this year’s World Cup. Up to 500,000 people are expected to visit the country during the football tournament, which begins in June. The director of the Cape Town-based Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce, Eric Harper, told news network CNN that a rise in demand for prostitution during the World Cup could be a “recipe for disaster”, as researchers have estimated that almost half of female sex workers in Johannesburg alone have HIV. Decriminalisation could improve public authorities’ access to sex workers and prevent the spread of HIV, Harper said. South Africa is the country with the largest number of HIV positive people in the world, around 5.7 million according to the United Nations.

Nelson Mandela on US terror watch list

here’s another american fraud…

AllAfrica: The United States House of Representatives passed legislation Thursday to erase from government records the designation of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) and its leaders as terrorists.
The legislation, which enjoys bipartisan backing and is supported by the State Department now heads to the U.S. Senate, where it is expected to win easy passage.
“This is a country with which we now have excellent relations, South Africa,” U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in recent Congressional testimony. “It’s frankly a rather embarrassing matter that I still have to waive in my own counterpart, the foreign minister of South Africa, not to mention the great leader Nelson Mandela,” she said, referring to South Africa’s former president who remains on the United States government terrorism watch list.

Nigerian govt seeking compensation for losses incurred by Nigerians in South Africa

The Nigerian government is seeking compensation for losses incurred by Nigerians in South Africa during the recent xenophobic attacks on foreigners. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe said a list of Nigerians who lost their properties is being compiled. Meanwhile, the South African government has announced plans to set up seven camps around the country for homeless migrants. Many people have been staying in increasingly unsanitary conditions at temporary shelters.

Only 50 yards from the camp is a brightly lit petrol station with a Steers fast food restaurant. “Ja, I watched them hacking people with pangas [machetes] just across the road,” said the white manager. “But they didn’t come here, so we just carried on. Who knows, some of the killers might have come across here for a hamburger in the middle of things, I don’t know.”

independence of South Africa is unfortunately a partial success

Today the independence of South Africa is unfortunately a partial success. Black South Africans own less than 15% of private wealth in South Africa. The figure is much less for combined black ownership of major South African Corporation. None of the top 15 companies are black owned. This is despite the black South Africans constituting 80% 0f the total population. In terms of inequality and poverty that is rampant, South Africa internal cohesion remains ticking time BOMB.

Opposition leaders Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara, leaders of the two MDC formations, held a press conference in South Africa on Monday where they announced that they would be joining forces to ensure the MDC holds the majority in parliament. An Yue Jiang could be seized by South African Navy?

The Alliance indicated that should the ship enter South African waters, it could be arrested and taken into one of our harbours. The Jasa spokesman continued to say that: “The arms must then be put in bond until assurances are obtained from the Chinese Government that they will be returned to China. Any promise from the ship owner is insufficient as it becomes unenforceable the moment the ship leaves SA territorial waters. The captain may say he is going home and yet immediately sail for Angola once he has fuel in his bunkers.”

The Southern Africa Litigation Center says the ship left South Africa on Friday after a High Court ordered that the cargo and the ship not be moved.
The ship had anchored just outside Durban harbour after receiving permission late Wednesday to dock. The human rights group asked the court to intervene to keep the arms from being taken to politically troubled Zimbabwe.
The group says the vessel was already sailing away when officials tried to serve the order on the ship.

ZIMBABWEAN opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday called on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to relieve President Thabo Mbeki of his mediation duties and immediately replace him with “a special envoy” similar to one that brokered a deal in Kenya.
“We want to thank President Mbeki for all of his efforts, but he needs to be relieved of his duties,” Tsvangirai said.
