Stabroek News: Thousands of Region Seven residents rallied in Bartica yesterday to protest government proposals they say will destroy the gold mining industry and with it their livelihoods.

In passionate tones, a sea of yellow-clad residents swept through the mining community, defending their right to mine. Significantly, leaders and villagers of several of the region’s Amerindian communities allied with miners; they participated in the protest march and conveyed messages of support. Local businesses organisations as well as other mining communities showed their support and the majority of businesses in the town were shuttered. The passenger boat service between Parika and Bartica was halted and though schools were open, only a few students turned up.

The decision to terminate the services of Bulkan was communicated to her via an e-mail sent on December 23 by Ken Andrasko of the World Bank’s Carbon Finance Unit. In the email, Andrasko said the FCPF was disbanding the Suriname and Ghana TAP review teams… “We expect to move to a different process early next year … to add comparative perspective,” he wrote.
In the email, he also thanked her for her insights and “for pushing the review team substantively, and for contributing to the Suriname TAP review.”

Additionally, the government has asked for the removal of Bulkan, a forestry critic, from a technical panel of the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), stating that the country has serious concerns over her ability to be an objective assessor in that body.
The concerns were raised in a letter, leaked to this newspaper, and written by the Ministry of Agriculture [a supporter of torture against African Guyanese]. The letter was signed by Minister Robert Persaud and dated November 26, 2009, and copied to President dictator Bharrat Jagdeo; Commissioner of Forestry, James Singh; and Benoit Bousquet, World Bank’ FCPF.
